Conversion
Matt grew up in a broad evangelical Southern Baptist church that was relatively shallow in its teaching. While he would have professed to be a Christian, he lived a self-absorbed and self-centered life with no real relationship with God. In high school, as he began to wrestle with spiritual questions, he did not find satisfactory answers at church and observed significant hypocrisy. Meanwhile, many of his friends were Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, atheist, or agnostic and were, humanly speaking, good people. As a result, he became increasingly jaded and cynical about Christianity.
Matthew’s identity and sense of purpose revolved around his talents and abilities—academics, music, and drama—which fostered a sense of superiority over others and reinforced a trajectory of selfishness. God began working in his life during his freshman year of college. He was first confronted with the instability of the identity he had built, as he encountered others who were equally or more gifted. His sense of self-worth was shaken, and the things he had trusted in began to feel empty and unsatisfying.
Around this time, Matt met a group of believers who were serious about their faith and invited him to a Bible study using teachings by R.C. Sproul. Through this, he was confronted with the holiness of God and convicted of his idolatry and selfishness. One night, under the weight of these truths, he prayed that he would forsake his pride if he could truly know God. At that moment, he experienced a profound awareness of God’s presence and love. From that point forward, he developed a growing hunger for Scripture and a desire to live for God. The direction of his life was permanently changed.
