Graduate Profile: Osagie Azeta
/My name is Osagie Azeta and I reside in the city of Lagos, Nigeria. For many years, this sprawling city has been the backdrop of my life and my calling to ministry. I am deeply blessed to be married to my wife, Oluwafunmilayo, who is my constant support, my confidante, and my faithful partner in the gospel. Together, the Lord has entrusted us with the immense joy and responsibility of raising three sons: Tony, Jesse, and Calvin. By God’s grace, I serve as a pastor at Sovereign Grace Bible Church, where I am privileged to shepherd a people bought by the precious blood of Christ.
My spiritual journey is a profound testimony to God’s delivering power and His relentless pursuit of His own. The Lord did not only rescue me from the darkness of general unbelief, He also graciously delivered me from the deceptive and false gospel of the Word of Faith movement that is so prevalent here in Nigeria. For a time, I was caught in a religious system that obscured the true glory of Christ behind empty promises of material prosperity, worldly success, and physical health. However, our sovereign God revealed to me the utter spiritual bankruptcy of those teachings. Through the true gospel, He offered me a hope that is eternal and secure—a hope rooted entirely in the finished, sufficient work of Jesus Christ rather than in my own strength, declarations, or willpower.
Since that time of deliverance, my walk with Christ has been a continuous discovery of the limitless and captivating beauty of the gospel. I have moved from the shifting sands of man-centered theology to the firm, unshakable foundation of the doctrines of grace. Looking back, I recognize God’s meticulous providence in every season of my life. I see specifically how He used Pastor Tony at Sovereign Grace Bible Church to correct my many misunderstandings, patienty grounding me in the Scriptures and encouraging me toward a life of biblical holiness and integrity.
My enrollment in Reformed Baptist Seminary (RBS) was a vital and providential part of this ongoing theological reformation. I found RBS to be a sanctuary of sound doctrine—thoroughly centered on Christ, graciously Reformed in its convictions, and remarkably relevant for a pastor serving in the complex environment of an urban African context. The rigorous academic demands of the MDiv program served not only to sharpen my mind but also to refine my character. The curriculum helped shape both my private beliefs and my public ministry, ensuring that my orthodoxy is matched by a biblical orthopraxy. At a time when I needed to replace old, ingrained errors with the clear light of biblical truth, God used RBS to equip me as a more faithful steward of His Word.
I could never have completed this academic and spiritual journey without the sacrificial support of my wife, Oluwafunmilayo. She has stood by me with unwavering devotion through every challenge of balancing the needs of our family, the weight of church leadership, and the intensity of my studies. I am also deeply grateful to the faculty and leadership of the seminary for their investment in my life and ministry. I stand now better prepared and more equipped to serve the Lord and His people at Sovereign Grace Bible Church. My earnest prayer is that the person and work of Jesus Christ, as revealed in the Scriptures, remains the heart, the soul, and the substance of all my ministry for as long as I live. To God alone be the glory.
